Everyone loves yogurt. It’s cool, creamy, delicious, and most importantly, healthy. This is the reason why in today’s world, we can find Yogurt in different forms and flavours. Along with that comes the question: is yogurt a health food or a dessert? The truth is, today’s yogurt can be either, depending on the type you choose. But which yogurt should you pick?
By now, we should know that not all yogurts are equal. Some are just better than other products. Here are some key qualities of healthy yoghurt:

Low or no added sugar

Yogurt now comes in an array of flavors. There are fruit based, sweetened, and those desserts sprinkled with crushed sweets. However, if you are looking for the healthiest type of yogurt, go for the plain and unflavored.
Plain yogurt already contains some natural sugar and it is easy to develop taste for it. If you don’t want the taste of plain yogurt, however, experts suggest to sweeten them with natural fruits such as mango, apple, berries, or even chia seeds. In this way, you can have healthier and more delicious yogurt on your plate.

Yogurt with live cultures

The best types of yogurt the ones with probiotics. Many refer to probiotics as live cultures, but it’s worth noting that all yogurts have live cultures but only a few have added probiotics.
The most common probiotics used in yogurts are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. These healthy bacteria are proven to be beneficial in maintaining a healthy digestive system. They can also stimulate our immune system, and help control body weight, and some inflammatory markers.

If you are going to shop for yogurt product, always check the nutrition facts and ingredients list of the product. These product labels can tell you so many things about the products including what’s inside your yogurt.
In looking for a yogurt’s ingredients list, look for added ingredients such as sugar, artificial flavors, dyes, and other preservatives. It’s worth noting that in choosing yogurt to buy, it’s always best to pick the ones with fewer ingredients. If healthy yoghurt is your focus, you should stay away from yogurt with sucrose, glucose, agave nectar, buttered syrup, caramel, fruit juice, and cane sugar. These may be different names, but these are all just sugar.
